Sweet six for Firestars

Sweet six for Firestars

The reigning Gilley’s Shield champions, the New South Wales Firestars, began the second round of the 2019 Open Women’s National Softball Championship just as they did the first with another solid victory.

Now undefeated through six matches, the girls in blue comfortably got home over the Victoria Titans with a 5-1 score line.

Taylah Tsitsikronis, Shannon Keevers, Tarni Stepto, Jenna Trim and Emma Iuliano were amongst the runs, two coming in the 1st and three in the 3rd innings.

The Titans solo run came courtesy of Amelia Mercuri in the 5th inning while pitchers Ilsa Anstey and Brittany Kennett did well to keep the Firestars to just five runs following their 14 run blitz in the previous match.

An impressive 13 strikeouts in seven innings from Jailyn Ford kept the ACT Diamonds in check, not allowing a single run and only one hit on her watch.

A Georgia Hood run in the 5th inning was enough to deny the Diamonds a hat-trick of wins and get the Starz home 1-0.

A back and forth match ensued when the WA Flames took on the Queensland Heat who were locked at 3-3 at the end of regulation seven innings.

The Flames took full advantage of the extra inning racing home through four scoring plays, in reply, the struggling Heat could only record one more run giving WA the win 7-5.
