The Travelodge Aussie Spirit have advanced to the Super Rounds of the WBSC Asia/Oceania Olympic Qualifier after another comfortable win over Hong Kong today.
It was Australia’s third win of the tournament and allowed them to qualify at the top of Pool B with their undefeated record.
Australia took their chance to rest skipper Stacey Porter and star pitcher Kaia Parnaby as they were able to make light work of Hong Kong and continue along the road to Tokyo 2020.
The Aussie Spirit took some time to get their eye in but quickly took control once the bats got hot.
Taylah Tsitsikronis’s impressive tournament continued opening the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, adding to her tally of runs scored in three games.
A stand up triple from Michelle Cox sent another two runners home, who later crossed herself off a Stacey McManus double.
Australia had four hits for a total of five runs for the second inning.
Tarni Stepto was phenomenal in the pitchers circle, throwing heat for seven strikeouts, six of them coming consecutively. Of the 51 pitches she threw, 33 were strikes. Gabbie Plain closed out the game with two strikeouts for the Spirit.
But the highlight undoubtedly belonged to Carmie Sorensen who belted an inside-the-park home run, putting the icing on the 8-0 victory.
The win sets up the Philippines, who edged New Zealand to advance, in the first of two Super Rounds on Friday at 7:30pm AEST.
Australia will then play China, also undefeated, Saturday evening at 5:00pm AEST. The country with the best winning record from the entire tournament will advance to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
