Some of the best softball talent in the West will run a stack of West Australian celebrities through their paces in a Fully Loaded Softball game during the Diamond Sport Spectacular, raising awareness of the Good Chat Foundation and participation of diamond sports in the state.
The Diamond Sport Spectacular, taking place at The Ballpark, Thornlie this Saturday 5 December, is a collaborative effort between Australian Baseball League club Perth Heat, Softball WA and Tee-Ball WA and will feature current and former sporting stars from AFL, rugby union, netball, boxing and MMA as well as media personalities from The Bachelor franchise and of course a host of softball and baseball stars.
Alongside the Fully Loaded game, the celebration will also feature a tee-ball carnival, celebrity home-run derby and be capped off with a Perth Heat Spring Training game.
Leading one of the celebrity teams in the Fully Loaded game will be WA Flames star and former Junior Spirit representative Sara Riou who earlier this year took out the Summer Slam – Fully Loaded Softball tournament with the Panthers in Blacktown.
The innovative format has a number of changes to the traditional game including shorter homerun fences, bases loaded at the top of each inning and only three innings per side.
“I’m really looking forward to taking part in Diamond Sport Spectacular, it’s a great initiative from the Perth Heat and Softball WA to come together and celebrate both sports,” said Riou who played alongside Travelodge Aussie Spirit captain Stacey Porter with the Panthers.
“The fully loaded softball format has been a great success in promoting a new and exciting style of the game, hopefully we’ll be able to convert a few people who come out for the day into the club competitions we have here in WA.
“After we won the Summer Slam earlier this year I’ve definitely got a reputation to up-hold, so hopefully these guys from other sports are up to scratch!”
Joining Riou for the game is Aislinn Morris from the current Junior Aussie Spirit squad as well as a host of local stars including Mackayla Denney, Ashlee Harwood, Paige Smith and Willow Swinbourn.
They’ll be on hand to guide fellow athletes including MMA fighter Soa Palelei, Australian netballers Courntey Bruce and and Kaylia Stanton, former Wallabies Matt Hodgson and Nathan Charles, AFL player Michael Johnson, and former professional baseballer for the Sand Diego Padres, Corey Adamson.
Swapping their roses for bats will be Bachelor alumni Nikki Gogan, Locky Gilbert, Alisha Aitken-Radburn, Glenn Smith and Cam Cranley.
The Diamond Sports Spectacular festivities kick-off from 3:00pm with the tee-ball carnival, for tickets and more information, visit perthheat.com.au.
