Social 7s competition and event highlights in 2015

Corporate competitions

In February, Softball Australia ran one-day corporate competitions in Melbourne and Sydney for beverage company Bacardi Lion. Over 140 participants were involved across the two cities, with Bacardi Lion hailing the events as a “roaring success”.

In November, Softball Australia established a four week Monday night competition close to Melbourne’s CBD. Initially created as an opportunity for a group of corporate teams, including Softball Australia partner Flourish PR, the competition grew to six teams through promotion on social networking website Meetup.

University competition

In May, Social 7s was part of the program of Unibattle, the new Australian University Sport event for alternative sports. Held on the Gold Coast, five university teams participated in the event, including three from Queensland and two from NSW. CTI Aussie Spirit member and Western Sydney University student Taylah Tsitsikronis was an ambassador for the Social 7s event.

School Teachers competition

In September, Softball Australia, in partnership with Softball Victoria, ran a one-day Social 7s competition at the Victorian Teachers Games. Following on from the success of the seven team event in 2014, this year’s event, held in Shepparton, attracted 12 teams with over 100 participants.

Affiliate competitions

A number of affiliates were able to utilise Social 7s to attract new members and generate revenue.

These included:

  • Southern Tasmania: ran a five team competition from April to June, attracting 55 participants, including 30 new members.
  • South Brisbane: ran a five team competition from August to September
  • Glen Eira: is currently running a four team competition which began in October
  • Toowoomba: is currently running a five team competition which began in October

Sporting Clubs

Softball Australia is looking to deliver Social 7s to sporting clubs outside of softball, as a way of gaining new members. From October, Softball Australia has been running a four team Social 7s competition at the Doncaster Baseball Club. There is currently interest from the Waverley Baseball Club to run a competition for their club in the new year.
