South Australian Sophie Roberts has been added to the Junior Aussie Spirit team in place of the injured Monique Smith and will contest the WBSC U-19 Women’s Softball World Cup in Irvine, USA from 10-17 August.
Roberts was named in the initial squad of 30 earlier this year and has been called into the team of 17 after Smith was unable to recover fully from her injury in time for the international tournament.
A talented athlete, Roberts was earlier this month named in the 21 & Under Australian Women’s indoor cricket squad. Her South Australian team also took out the 21 & Under National Championship.
Junior Spirit Head Coach Kerrie Porter said the decision to rule Smith out with injury was difficult but is confident in Roberts’ ability to play a role in their World Cup campaign.
“We were obviously hoping Monique would be able to take her place in Irvine, but unfortunately she hasn’t recovered as well as we had hoped,” said Porter.
“Sophie is a great player and we’re looking forward to having her join the team when we fly to America in August.”
The Junior Spirit will arrive in America on 1 August, 10 days before the World Cup begins, allowing time for final preparations for Australia to claim their sixth medal on the international stage.
In 12 editions of the Junior Women’s World Cup, the Australians have finished in a best position of third place five times in 1991, 1995, 2003, 2007 and 2013.
