Queensland has shaken off their loss earlier today to beat South Australia following the opening day of the 2019 Men’s National Softball Championship at Hawker International Softball Centre.
Ryan Merriman, Jeremy Waters and Scott Watson all put runs on the board with James Purcell and Joshua Del Simone both putting up two runs each, Luke Vandegriendt added a home run for Queensland’s eight.
Pitcher Layton Reid kept the South Australians scoreless in the first three innings before they finally got on the board in the 4th inning courtesy of a Bryce Heal homer.
They needed to make up five runs at the top of the 7th but could only manage two, giving Queensland their first win for the tournament 8-5.
Western Australia opened their tournament with a win after accounting for the Victorians 5-4, WA pitcher Mark Harris doing the damage with both bat and ball.
At the bottom of the 1st, Harris belted a home run to get himself Scott Patterson and Brendon O’Bryne around the diamond.
Kyle Francis added another home run in the 3rd inning with Kurt Barbarich the last of the run scorers.
Harris was terrific with the ball, only two hits alongside 10 strikeouts for the match.
Ryan Shannahan scored two runs with Ricky Wheeler and Lewis Weldon adding the other two for the Victorians.
