Perfect conditions on day 1 at the Open Men’s Championship

Teams arrived at the diamonds for a 10:30am start in perfect conditions down at West Beach, the home of softball in South Australia. Championship hosts faced up to last year’s champions, the ACT 89ers in game 1 on Diamond 1 to get things underway. There was seemingly no answer to Andrew Kirkpatrick – whether he was in the batter’s box or at the pitching plate – as he batted in 5 runs and conceded none taking his side to an 11-2 win. ACT finished the day, 2 from 2 with a win over NSW but not even that was enough for them to finish on top for the day.

The Vics conceded no runs to win their two games over WA and SA, with a final score of 3-0 in both encounters. Other winners for the day were WA and NSW both defeating Qld, with the boys in blue ending a tough day for the Patriots, 9-0 in the final game of day 1.

Other strong individual performances for the day were:

  • NSW’s Harri Peters pitching effort in Game 6, grabbing ten strikeouts, and just one hit from his 5 innings.
  • Vic’s Pat Brackley knocking in 5 out of 6 runs for his team, including a 3-run homer to left-centre field against the Western Blaze.

Game 3 WA 6 dftd Qld 4
Game 4 ACT 3 dftd NSW 0
