Softball in the Top End has the honour of being the first in the country to return to their regular competition following the significant easing of COVID-19 restrictions in the Territory.
The Softball Northern Territory team will resume play today, a fitting date coinciding with International Softball Day, with the return of the Darwin Softball League.
Territorians are the first in the country to return to some resemblance of normality with full resumption of officiating, participating and supporting the playing of team sports, including softball.
“We’re very excited to get back underway with softball in the Territory, but at the same time, we’ll be taking the necessary precautions to keep everyone safe on the diamond,” said Softball NT CEO Nicky Bacon.
“We’ve developed return-to-sport guidelines which include an emphasis on hygiene and cleanliness as well as information for our spectators and volunteers around the diamonds.
“We’ll start with the Darwin Softball League today, then our Social 7s competitions will begin shortly afterwards and we’re also looking at locking in a date for Alice Springs as soon as we can.”
Softball Australia Chief Executive Officer David Pryles said the resumption of the sport in the Northern Territory is exciting for the entire softball community.
“To see softball return in the Northern Territory is a huge boost for our sport,” said Pryles.
“It’s been a tough few months for all sporting codes but Nicky and the Softball NT team have done an amazing job to get back up and running so quickly with the help of the NT Government.
“We’ll be watching keenly to take some lessons on their resumption and share it with the other states as restrictions continue to ease across the country and we can get back on the diamond.”
