The Labour Day long weekend in Adelaide is an exciting time for many reasons — but mostly for softball.
The impressive Diamond Sports Softball and Baseball facility will host the 2017 Labour Day Junior Softball Tournament at the SSA Headquarters in West Beach next year. It will be the 22nd time the annual event has been held.
Games will be played over four days, from Friday, September 29 through to Monday, October 2.
Age divisions will include:
- Open Women
- Under 18 Women
- Under 15 Girls
- Under 13 Girls
- Under 11 Girls
- Under 19 Men
- Under 16 Boys
- Under 13 Mixed
Tournament Convenor Peter Messner says the event has a proud history that featured an amazing 45 teams a decade ago. Many of those had travelled from as far away as Perth and Darwin.
That number has dropped due to other events being held in other states, but 26 teams competed last year and the number could rise to about 30 in 2017.
When it started in 1996, the tournament was all about juniors, but in recent years it has included Open Women’s games.
“The tournament is a mixture of fun and serious competition,” Messner says. “It’s not as full-on as some of the tournaments in other states, but it’s still a high standard.
“And it’s more user-friendly than most other events. You don’t have to be in a rep team to play. Club teams are more than welcome.”
“We try to cater for everyone.”
Accommodation provider throughout the tournament is the multiple award winning Adelaide Shores Caravan Park.
