Japan and New Zealand heading Down Under

Softball Australia, in conjunction with Softball NSW, is delighted to be hosting Japan and New Zealand at the International Down Under Series and the Invitational Down Under Series at Blacktown International Sportspark throughout February, providing a great opportunity to see the best women’s softball in Australia since the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

The first Series features the Australian Open Women’s Squad, the world’s number 1 team, Japan, and the New Zealand national women’s team, competing in a double round-robin format with each team playing 6 games, culminating in a championship round on Sunday afternoon.  All the action starts Friday 5 February at 2.30pm.

The series is a key part of the selection process for the Aussie Spirit as they prepare for the 2016 Women’s World Softball Championships in Canada this coming July.  Spectators will see two teams – Australia Gold and Green – providing 30 girls the opportunity to make the VIA Network Aussie Spirit Team when they take on the Japan Toyota Red Terriers in the Down Under Invitational Series from 19-21 February.

The International Down Under Series is part of Japan’s national team training camp from 1-11 February at Blacktown International Sportspark.  Players and coaches are invited to Blacktown to see the Japanese girls in their gruelling training regime.

If you love softball this is a must see event.  Come out to Blacktown and cheer on our Aussie girls as they play the best in the world!

The second Series features the VIA Network Aussie Spirit take on the Japan Toyota Red Terriers, the world’s number 1 professional softball team, who will be returning to Blacktown, NSW for the second consecutive season to hold their pre-season training camp from 16-24 February.

The Red Terriers’ line-up features the world’s best female pitcher, American import Olympic Medallist, Monica Abbott, infielder Natasha Watley and five members of the Japan national women’s team. The Red Terriers were the minor premiers in the Japan Women’s Softball League this past year – a feat they have accomplished five of the last six years. They were defeated in the 2015 grand final. The Red Terriers won the inaugural Down Under Series in 2015 with a perfect 6-0 record.

The VIA Network Aussie Spirit will host the Toyota Japan Red Terriers in a series of games from 19-21 February at Blacktown International Sportspark. This is a key series for the Spirit as they make preparations and last minute selections for the roster that will compete at the 2016 Women’s World Softball Championship to be played at Vancouver, Canada in July. The Aussie Spirit team will be selected at the completion of the tournament held 5-7 February against the Japan and New Zealand national teams.

There will also be opportunities for coaches and players to observe the Red Terriers’ training camp during the week to see how the best professional team in the world prepares for games.
