Huskies fall short in College World Series bid

Australian softball star Gabbie Plain gave it her best shot, but her Washington Huskies were beaten by Florida State in the NCAA College World Series in Oklahoma City.

Gabbie Plain pitches in relief for the Huskies.

Having pitched a complete game and allowing only one run in game one, which the Seminoles won 1-0, Plain took a seat at the start of game two as coach Heather Tarr opted to go with ace pitcher Taran Alvelo.

Florida State hitters came alive against Alvelo, setting the scene for an 8-3 victory and the first CWS win in team history.

Unfortunately for the Huskies, Alvelo did not have her best stuff, allowing six earned runs on seven hits and one walk.

With her team trailing in the fourth inning, Plain was summoned to rescue the situation. But the damage had been done, with homers by Anna Shelnutt and Elizabeth Mason setting up an 8-2 lead.

The only run Plain conceded was a solo homer to Florida State infielder Jesse Warren, widely regarded as the best hitter in the game, whose shot over the centre field fence on a 3-2 pitch was her 22nd homer of the season.

The game ends a remarkable freshman season for Plain, a 183cm right-hander from Sydney, who impressed everyone connected with top-level college softball with her skill and poise after being thrust into the limelight in her debut season.
