FOX SPORTS Australia to showcase Men’s and Women’s softball in 2021

Softball Australia is pleased to announce FOX SPORTS Australia will once again showcase some of the best softballers in the world through the broadcast of seven total days of men’s and women’s competition.

The confirmation comes off the back of a rescheduling of the Summer of Softball due to the effect of COVID-19 on the National Championship schedule and will force the tournaments to a new date on the events calendar.

The Summer Slam – Fully Loaded Softball event will run over the weekend from Friday 5 March to Sunday 7 March.

In 2021, the Australia Pacific Cup will open on International Women’s Day, Monday 8 March. The event will run until 11 March and thanks to FOX SPORTS Australia’s renewed support, will be broadcast live on two event days.

After two successful iterations of the Summer Slam – Fully Loaded Softball featuring some of the world’s best female athletes, Softball Australia is excited to be able to showcase men’s softball using the shortened format of the game through a live broadcast from 13-14 March, 2021.

It all equates to seven days of high quality softball as the Travelodge Aussie Spirit prepare for the re-scheduled Tokyo 2021 Olympics, as well as providing a platform to showcase the men’s side of the game through the innovative Fully Loaded Softball format.

“FOX SPORTS Australia committing again to softball amidst an uncertain time for sport in Australia is fantastic news for fans and athletes,” said David Pryles, Chief Executive Officer at Softball Australia.

“During the Summer Slam in 2020 we were able to give some of our up and coming softballers a platform to showcase what they can do to an international audience, and we’re excited to be able to provide that again.

“And of course with the re-scheduling of the Tokyo Olympics, we’ll have another chance to see the Travelodge Aussie Spirit stars in action as they vie for final selection in the Olympic team.”

The announcement marks the third consecutive year of support from FOX SPORTS Australia in broadcasting the premiere international women’s softball event along with the innovative Summer Slam tournament, also in its third year.

“We have been impressed by Softball Australia’s innovative new Summer Slam format over the past two years and are excited to see what the next iteration will bring,” said Steve Crawley, Executive Director at FOX SPORTS Australia.

“Further to this, we are committed to supporting Softball Australia return to broadcast following the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and to provide a key platform for athletes as they prepare for the Tokyo Olympics.

“To have the opening day of the Australia Pacific Cup coinciding with International Women’s Day is sure to be a fantastic celebration of women’s sport and we look forward to taking part.”

Pryles added the need for flexibility in regards to all three events as the world continues to adjust to a new ‘COVID normal’, with a view to confirm a venue in the coming weeks.

“As it stands, we’ll aim towards all three tournaments going ahead and we’ll adjust accordingly in relation to travel restrictions both domestically and internationally,” added Pryles.

“We’re committed to providing first class softball to fans that they’ll hopefully be able to enjoy live in person, and also through FOX SPORTS Australia.”
