Defending champions NSW Firestars are off to the perfect start in the 2019 Gilley’s Shield, comfortably accounting for the ACT Diamonds 6-0.
Shooting for their third National Championship in a row, NSW wasted no time in putting runs on the board, Stacey Porter racing home twice while Taylah Tsitsikronis, Rachel Lack, Stacey McManus and Tahli Moore all recorded a single run.
Pitcher Ellen Roberts starred on the mound, she accounted for eight of the Diamond’s batters with only one hit against her name, Amelia Cudicio was tidy in her two innings striking out two batters for no hits.
Joining them in the winner’s circle is the South Australia Starz after an 8th inning was required for their 2-1 victory of the Victoria Titans.
Victoria was on the front foot early after Jessica Bahn raced home and took a 1-0 lead into the 2nd inning.
Not to be outdone, Belinda White hit a home run off Victorian pitcher Monica Perry to centre-left field in the bottom of the 2nd to even up the scores at one run apiece. Neither team could record a scoring play for the remaining five innings.
Starz took up the bat at the top of the 8th with Jordan Lambert starting at 2nd base. She was able to steal third and ran home to put the South Australian on the board with a win.
The Starz are back on the diamond now against the Queensland Heat as NSW and Victoria back up against one another.
