Fay Aterini today celebrates her 80th birthday and proving the old adage, age is just a number, will likely pitch the entire game for her beloved Davidson Dames this weekend before they play semi-final softball in her local competition.
The avid sportsperson hasn’t missed a season for the D&D’s since signing up in 1998, usually pitching for at least half a game, although last week saw all seven innings.
“After my husband passed away, I needed an activity and I’ve always been sporty,” Fay told 2GB’s Ray Hadley this morning.
“It was in my late 50’s and that was when I saw an ad in the paper for softball, I rang a friend who was interested in joining and off we went.”
Softball has always been a family affair for the Aterini’s with three generations all playing in the Manly Waringah Softball Association at one stage.
And it’s likely the MWSA will have more milestones to celebrate with a number of their members aged in their late 60’s and 70’s proving softball is truly a game for life.
