2017 Open Men John Reid Shield – Day 6 (Finals)

The preliminary final which had reigning champions NSW up against Qld was an intriguing contest. Across the board the contest was very tight, with the match seeing its first score in the top of the 4th as the maroons took 2 across the plate. NSW managed 5 hits (compared to Qld’s 4) including a single and home run to James Todhunter. Qld responded quickly with their next turn at bat as a result of some solid team batting.

Qld ended the game winners (3-1) and booked a spot in the Grand Final, ending NSW chances of a back-to-back title and sending them home in straight sets.

WA were the victors in the 5 v 6 playoff defeating SA comfortably 10-0. Sean Duxbury (WA, 3 RBIs) and Mathew Walker (WA, 7 SO’s) were the pick of the bunch.

The ACT 89ers claimed their 15th Open Men’s Championship when they defeated Queensland 3 runs to nil in the final of the 2017 John Reid Shield.

While Queensland played a solid game they were unable to get on top of the strong pitching performance from Australian pitcher Andrew Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick was on fire giving up just the 1 safe hit with 13 strike outs.  Kirkpatrick backed up his pitching with 2 safe hits himself to win the award for player of the grand final.

It was a dominant performance by the ACT with safe hits to Josh McGovern, Nick Norton, Jamie Sheehan, Andrew Kirkpatrick (a single and a double) and home runs to Zenon Winters and Josh White.  For Queensland Marshall Kronk managed the only safe hit.

The ACT backed up its batting with some excellent fielding including a double play by short-stop Evan Byrne and a spectacular diving catch by second baseman Jarrod Bradbury.
