Under 17 Girls – Day 6 & 7 (FINALS)

The 17 girls began Day 6 nice and early, having to play the postponed round robin games. WA, Qld and NSW all posted big scores to knock over their opponents as the ladder finished in the following order:

2 SA
3 Vic
4 Qld
6 WA

A 3pm start for the 3rd v 4th elimination final gave teams at least a 2 hour break to get ready for finals softball. The Vic team came out with a point to prove as some terrific team offence had the team score 5 runs in the bottom of the second inning. Qld answered in the sixth with 5 runs of their own before a quick reply in bottom 6 from Vic shut out the Qld momentum.

Out on Diamond 1 it was NSW and SA battling it out for a spot in the Esther Deason Final. It looked as though SA would be the first team to advance as they took a 4 run lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning. The defending champions brought themselves back in the contest with 2 runs in the sixth inning before closing the game out in the 7th adding 3 more and sending SA to play Vic the next day with a 5-4 win.

WA started Day 7 with a 9 – 3 win over ACT in the 5 v 6 playoff game as ACT gave up too many errors taking themselves out of the contest. Game 34, the prelim final, allowed SA to show the competition why they were a top 2 placed team all week as they put on 7 runs to end the game in the sixth under the mercy rule. Georgia Hood (SA) put on another terrific all-round performance as she kept Vic scoreless with the ball while also netting 2 RBIs with the bat.

Back onto diamond 1 for the precursor of the Gilleys Shield and the final of the Esther Deason Shield, NSW came out to stamp their authority on the game with a 2 run first inning on the back of Whatman and Trim (both NSW) singles. 10 SO’s from Emily Peters (NSW) gave SA minimal time in the batters box enabling NSW to go into the fifth inning with a 4-0 lead. SA could not manage to get back in the contest from there as they watched the girls in blue claim back-to-back titles.
