Daily Wrap, Day 5 – January 6, Blacktown

Open Women – Day 5

It has taken until Day 5 and the final round robin game for the Qld Heat to lose their first game of the tournament. Coming up against rivals NSW for the second time the Queenslanders did not come out firing as the NSW team put on 5 runs in the first two innings and came out winners (6-2).

The win puts NSW atop the ladder going into today’s finals, clinching the Edebone Weber Shield.

SA Starz mixed results from their two games saw them narrowly miss out on a finals berth as ACT beat them in a close encounter in Game 25 (1-0). Both teams finished equal on points and runs against so ladder position came down to result of the teams round robin clashes – ACT advanced and booked themselves a game against WA in an elimination final.

Standout Individual Performances

Desiree Ybarra and Amber Johnson (both WA) had an outstanding pitching record in the Flames win over the Vic Titans in Game 28. Giving up only 2 hits and no earned runs between them they aided there team to a 3rd place finish.

Sam Poole (NSW) had another outstanding game in the tournament defining win over Qld Heat last night. 4 hits from her 4 AB’s including a whopping 5 RBIs capped off a stellar round robin from the Firestars power hitter.

Under 17 Girls – Day 5

The fifth day of play brought about some interesting results as we saw several action packed games with a lot more runs scored across the day. 5 of the 6 games saw teams reach double figures in the runs column, with Qld and WA playing out a high scoring 16-9 ball game (Qld winners).

NSW, SA and Qld took two wins a piece for the day as they cemented 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place respectively. The Victorians held onto 4th place despite not adding a victory on day 5.

Standout Individual Performances

Sasha Willems and Shayla Whatman (both NSW) had consistent games against ACT netting 3 RBIs each in the comfortable 11-0 victory.

In a day filled with big hits and high scores SA joined the party besting the Vics 14-4. Brodie Borovnik (SA) the star with 4 RBIs from 2 hits including a nice single and then a triple later in the game.
