Under 19 Men – Day 5
Day 5 saw temperature sit in the mid-thirties and plenty of action down at Redlands Softball.
The first game of the day saw ACT take on the winless WA. The Western Australian’s have had a tough week against some very strong opponents and ACT came out fighting hoping to make it two from two against the WA side. However with strong batting putting early runs on the board WA’s were able to claim their first win of the competition with a 9-8 victory. WA then brought their new found confidence into their game against Vic later that afternoon. Starting strong WA gained two runs in the first innings and three in the second putting early pressure on. The lead proved unassailable for the Vic team and WA came out 7-3 victors.
New South Wales continued their domination in the morning with a convincing 14-0 win over the ACT’s. In what has easily been the most defensive game of the tournament, NSW and Qld were not giving an inch in the evening game. NSW scoring on an error in the top of the second proved the only difference in a 1-0 ball game. NSW is now two games clear atop the ladder.
Earlier in the day Qld knocked over Vic 11-0 and are now unlikely to move out of 2nd position. With two round games left for each team, it is Vic and WA who stand with the most to gain or lose on day 6, a win for either team may secure 4th and a finals place.
Standout Individual Performances
Catcher Jack Burt (WA) was a standout in the win over the Vic’s with 3 RBI’s from 3 hits and 4 AB’s. A homer to centre field in the bottom of the second was the highlight.
Qld pitcher Layton Reid had a knockout performance with 11 SO’s in the 4 innings he pitched against Vic.
