2017 Open Men John Reid Shield – Day 3

The runs are continuing to mount, another 17 home runs on day 3, but the teams have started to sort themselves out.

At the end of day 3 the ACT is sitting on top of the ladder a game clear of NSW. While Queensland is currently equal on points with NSW it has played an extra game. Victoria who are a game behind Queensland have also played the extra game.  WA is knocking on Victoria’s door, 2 points behind but with a game in hand.

The much anticipated game between NSW and ACT didn’t disappoint the crowd providing a good battle along with some exciting softball with both teams fired up for the game.  With a run in the first innings NSW took the early lead which they maintained until the 4th inning when the ACT bats started cracking.  A Josh McGovern outfield single scored Matthew Wickham and Jarrod Bradbury who were on base following safe hits.  Further runs in the 5th and 6th innings put the result beyond doubt for the ACT.

It was a home run feast in the earlier game between Queensland and WA with 8 home runs scored.  The standout batter in this game was Queensland’s Julian Jemmott with 4 safe hits from 4 AB’s including 2 home runs and 7 RBI’s.

Victoria shut out SA in the other game to complete the round 1 competition games.

Standout Individual Performances

Victoria’s Joel Goodall had a tremendous all round game against SA pitching 6 innings and not giving away any hits.  Joel backed up his pitching with the bat with 2 safe hits and 3 RBI’s.

James Brownlow (NSW) hit 2 home runs from 2 ABs against Victoria.
