2017 Open Men John Reid Shield – Day 1
The nation’s best male softballers got into action on Day 1 of the 2017 Open Men John Reid Shield and didn’t disappoint with some big hitting and closely fought games at the Hawker International Softball Centre in the ACT.
Queensland were the surprise packet of day one downing both of last year’s grand finalists by one run. After defeating NSW 4 runs to 3, Queensland backed up to defeat the ACT 2 runs to 1 in a tie breaker. At the end of day one and with each team having played 2 games, Queensland sit solely on top of the standings as the only undefeated team.
The ACT, NSW, WA and Victoria all ended the day with one win and one loss, with SA still to open their account.
Standout Individual Performances
The big hitters were out in force on Day 1 with 8 home runs scored. Sean Duxbury (WA), Jarryd Farrell (SA) and James Brownlow (NSW) topped their home runs with 3 RBI’s, while Jayden Lach (NSW) and Andrew Kirkpatrick (ACT) added 2 RBI’s.
Other’s to hit the ball over the fence were Alex Cleary (SA), Brendon O’Byrne (WA) and Hayden Mathews (NSW).
