Daily Wrap, Day 1 – January 15, Mirrabooka

Under 19 Women – Day 1

Day 1 at Mirrabooka started out in stark contrast to the unfortunate delay to games in Redlands, with temperature in the 30’s and blue skies across the park. Games for the Under 19 Women got underway from 10:30am shortly after the Elinor McKenzie Shield was put back into the hands of Softball Australia for the 44th champion team to be crowned at the end of the week.

Event hosts WA kicked things off on Diamond 1 and did so in emphatic fashion with a 12-5 victory over the ACT. The rate of run scoring did not slow down throughout the day, with an average of just over 15 runs per game.

NSW and Qld showed there early dominance scoring 49 runs between them as they made their way to 2 victories a piece and ended the day sitting 1st and 2nd respectively. Victoria got the better of SA in a tight Game 5 to be the other winner of Day 1 (9-6) and leaving SA to join ACT as teams without a win.

Standout Individual Performances

Gabby Plain (NSW) got off to a great start in her first game of the tournament giving up only 2 hits for no runs pitching out the 5 inning game against SA. Her 11 SO’s capped a solid 7-0 win.

Qld centre fielder Tiffany Zuch had 3 hits from her 3 AB’s to bring in 3 RBI’s in the big 15-0 win over ACT. An inside the park home run in the bottom of the 1st the highlight.
