Comets ruin Spirit’s bid for three wins in a row

The Aussie Spirit’s mini-winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Cleveland Comets at Missouri Western University.

The Comets won 3-1, their first win in three games against the Spirit in the 2018 National Fastpitch Pro league.

The Spirit and Comets play again at the same venue tomorrow, followed by a double-header  in St Joseph, Missouri the following day.

Game 30: Cleveland Comets 3, Aussie Spirit 1

Aussie Spirit starting pitcher Monica Perry was flawless in the first inning but struck trouble in the second when Jade Rhodes led off with a home run and the next three batters all singled.

Plenty of fan support for the Aussie Spirit.

Two of them would come in to score, giving the Comets an early 3-0 lead.

It was not until the fifth inning that the Spirit could score a run. Carmelle Sorensen led off with a double, was sacrificed to second by Tamieka Whitefield and scored on an infield error.

With Cleveland starting pitcher Devin Brown in dominant form, that unearned run was the only score for the Spirit. Brown pitched a complete game, striking out four and walking three without allowing an earned run.

Sorensen had two of the Spirit’s three hits, with Shannon Keevers getting the other.

Stacey Porter, who has looked in ominous form since joining the Spirit this week, walked twice.

Perry struck out four and walked none in two innings, allowing just one earned run. She was relieved by Stephanie Trczinski, who pitched four innings and allowed just two hits, with four strikeouts. Amelia Cudicio pitched a perfect seventh inning.
