The Travelodge Aussie Spirit’s Tokyo Olympics campaign today received a boost with a donation from Australian Defence Force (ADF) Softball association members.

“The ADF Softball Association have been a fantastic supporter of the sport and their donation to the Travelodge Aussie Spirit is a reflection of this,” said Softball ACT Chief Executive Officer Ben Kirk.

“The generous donation will go straight the Travelodge Aussie Spirit squad as they prepare to win their first gold medal in Tokyo 2021.”

Softball ACT first supported an ADF National tournament in 2019, which provides overall fitness, team building, mental health and re-engaging with softball enthusiasts within the veteran community.

ADF Softball President Leith Roberts said the association is proud to make the donation to the squad ahead of the re-scheduled Olympic Games, along with their usual donation to the Play 4 a Cure Foundation, a charity focussed on funding cancer research.

“One of things we value in ADF Softball is how we as individuals can contribute back to the community,” said Roberts.

“Over the week of our National Tournament, we run a fundraising activity where individuals are encouraged to contribute throughout the week.”

Normally the proceeds of the fundraising activities each year are donated to Play 4 a Cure and over the last seven years, ADF Softball members have donated just over to $10,000 of their own money to the charity. Aussie Spirit Captain, Stacey Porter, is one of the charity’s ambassadors.

“With the Aussie Spirit qualifying for the Olympics, the ADF Softball players also wanted to support our Softball family and their return to the Olympics so we voted to split the donations between Play for a Cure and the Aussie Spirit.”

Roberts added their players take great pride in representing Australia both home and overseas and look forward to seeing the Travelodge Aussie Spirit take centre stage in Tokyo.

“Many of the ADF Softball players represent our country on the international stage supporting peace and operations around the world, and we wanted to assist the Aussie Spirit in achieving their Olympic Dream.”

Softball Australia Chief Executive Officer David Pryles thanked ADF Softball members for their generosity on behalf of the Travelodge Aussie Spirit.

“This donation is a wonderful gesture of support and will certainly help preparations over the next six months,” said Pryles.

“Our thanks to ADF Softball — we hope we can give you something to celebrate at the Tokyo Olympics.”
