The ACT 89’ers have kicked off the 2019 Open Men’s National Softball Championship with a win in front of their home crowd at the Hawker International Softball Centre.
Opening the tournament against New South Wales the 89’ers got off to the perfect start with Josh McGovern and Matthew Harrow on the board with runs at the top of the 1st inning.
Two more from Bolton Nussbaum and Matthew Wickham followed at the top of the 2nd and in the 4th Harrow crossed for his second run of the game off a brilliant homer by Kyle Johnston.
ACT was well in control for the entire game off the back of 10 strikeouts by pitcher Adam Folkard, the blues unable to record a run from the impressive display winning 6-0.
In their second match of the day, the ACT easily accounted for South Australia taking just five innings to claim a seven run win 8-1.
Harrow, Johnson, Wickham and McGovern again chalked up runs with both Bradbury boys Jarrod and Jeremy adding a single while Andrew Kirkpatrick crossed twice.
Blake Jackson recorded the only run for South Australia.
Queensland and Victoria played out a thrilling encounter, the Queenslanders crossed three times in the 3rd inning through doubles from Danny Brown and Ryan Merriman getting themselves and Jeremy Waters home.
The Vics fought back in the 4th inning when Lewis Weldon scored however a run from Queensland kept them three back into the 5th inning.
Two runs in the 5th, one in the 6th even things up as the teams entered the 7th inning tied at 4-4. Victoria exploded for five runs at the top of the 7th through Sam Kassianou, Todd Kriehn, Ricky Wheeler, Steve Dawson and Jason Kriehn.
They held the Queenslanders scoreless and won the match 9-4.
Victoria now plays West Australia as Queensland takes on South Australia this evening.
